rear main seal on a 92 4.0
« on: April 29, 2009, 03:18:30 AM »
Any one replace a rear main seal on a 4.0 yj?  Reg's wife has asked a mechanic friend and I if we would do it as a surprise for his return.  I've done a SB chevy, but never a jeep.

This could be a wrenching party, too :D

I've replaced a rear main seal on 2 CJ7s and a 91YJ. They were the same, but I think they were all 4.2L engines. They are easy to do as they are a two piece seals. I'd be game for a wrenching party.

Never done a rear main seal, but I have pulled the oil pan, and from what I have read, not much more involved from there.  Never met Reg, but I have heard he has the same Jeep I have, same color an everything.  Depending on when we do it, I in.

the rear main is very easy on those, but a little tricky at the same time.  just pull the pan and the last mian cap and it might just slide right out.

Did mine myself on my 93 cherokee, hardest part was lining all the damn bolts back up to put the oil pan back on, I ended up sliding a jack under it to hold it up. Just be really carefull with whatever you use as a punch to get the old seal out, I reccomend something plastic. I ended up unbolting the starter but was able to leave the exhaust on. It may be different with your YJ. Just follow this http://www.jeepin.com/features/rearmain/ you should be able to get it done without to much trouble.
