TJ Rear Main Seal (RMS)
« on: May 30, 2015, 11:54:14 PM »
Greetings Everyone,

Been out of the loop busy attending night school the last several months - hopeful to go wheel with you guys in the near future. Last October is switched to Royal Purple (RP) 10w30 for my TJ....the minor RMS leak grew larger and larger over time. So this past Memorial Day I tackled to project and swapped it out. Now the RMS leak is even worst...go figure. I've check the valve cover and oil filter area with no leaks - it's very apperant oil is seeping from RMS. Refilled with RP high mileage 10w30 oil and WIX oil filter.

I did noticed the RMS cap had two serious scratches on it....not sure if that would cause oil seepage.

Looking for suggestion and or POC information for a mechanic in the area.

Cheers!
David P.

They can be finicky when putting back together. I've only had to change one RMS and that was on my CJ7. Mine did the same thing. I got a friend to help the 2nd time just to make sure the pan was aligned correctly. It's just awkward putting everything back in and making sure it aligns correctly.

Did your new seal come with a new wear sleeve?

Usually most rear man seals come with a sleeve that slides over the crankshaft creating a new surface for the seal to ride on

I have seen a sleave for a front crank seal but never for a rear main oil seal. You will have to pull it apart again and inspect crank shaft for any scoring or scratches. Even small scratches will cause a leak and can damage new seal quickly. Some small scratches can be sanded with fine emery paper then followed with krokiss cloth. Its a time consuming job and must be done correctly or will leak. If u dont feel confident doing this then highly recomend you pay a shop to do it. Then if it is still leaking then its there problem.

Thanks for the feedback - going to dig into it to verify the oil pan gasket stayed in place correctly.
