Ball joints
« on: January 21, 2012, 06:03:49 PM »
So I'm installing a set of chromoly shafts in my dana 30 and I wanna make sure everything else is good to go with the front axle while in there. So I have about a 1/4" of vertical travel on my ball joints is this normal or do they need replaced?

That sounds like alot of movement. If your willing to invest in some expensive cromo shafts then its worth it to install new ball jounts. Recomend installing a quality set of Heavy Duty ball joints due to the large heavy tires your running and extra waight from all that armor.

the chromoly joints are synergy joints the standard spicer are $96 and the chromoly joints are $240 no sure i can justify bumping up for the stronger joints. I dont know anyone that has broken a ball joint and i think they would wear just as fast as the standard joints.

I have only seen a ball joint break once and that was at the "Great American Jeep Ralley" on an older XJ.  I agree it would be hard to justify spending that much on somehting that is a known failure.  At the same time, you are running a pretty heavy wheel and tire combo  and the extra weight of the exo on the D30.

They shouldn't wear as fast.  The chromoly steel will be more wear resistant as well as stronger.  That said, I don't know its worth the price.  For that much, you could probably have a set of Spicers cryo'd, which would probably be better yet.

I remember that! It was on the rock garden if I recall!
