lifter noise?
« on: April 21, 2010, 03:19:38 AM »
sounds similar to this video. seems to be coming from the left side of the valve cover.

my list of possible gremlins:
- exhaust manifold
- loose bolts that join the Torque Converter to flywheel.
- lifter noise
- Rocker arm
- piston skirt
- bell housing
- pulley
- flex plate

i have no idea, but im sure at least one of you has experienced this. If yah got anything let me know!

That sounds like lifter tick. Have you ever run Seafoam through your motor? I did that with one of my Jeeps and it cleared the lifter tick right up. It did end up coming back about 10k miles later, but I just did a Seafoam application again and it went away again. I sold the Jeep not too much later, but it was still running strong. Have you taken your valve cover off to see what it looks like under there? It could have a lot of gunk and just need everything cleaned up really good and maybe some small adjustments.

i know its normal, and i could probably drive it into the ground regardless. but its extremely annoying. I think I'm going to pull the cover off. I'm sure its junked up under there, I have blow by as well so, sea foam wouldn't hurt it either. Maybe I'll look for some loose bolts, and get some new hydraulic lifters while I'm at it.

use a mechanical stethiscope to pin down the location; they have them at most auto parts stores.  Or a long screwdriver or pry bar held to your ear, touched to various parts of the engine.  Its the easiest way to pin down noises

It could even be one of the pulleys, I had a hard time hearing but I noticed there is some slop in the belts and the fan.ill have to look into it on my 4 days off next week. I have all sorts of strange jeep noise issues right now

Did you fix your fan shroud yet? I know that was making a ticking noise Saturday.

Yeah I thought the fan shroud had fallen in again but when I went to check it it was still secured. Hence still troubleshooting the issue
