Gear Help Please

Im currently running stock 3:55 gears on 33's and it sucks, im going to a 35'' tire in the spring and need some help with what i should gear to.

My dad(mechanic for over 20 years) says i should stay around 4: 10 but every where else says at least a 4:56 or a 4:88.
since i sadly have chrome rims, they will be mounted on my 35's sorta like a anti-winter setup, and stock rims on my 33's. Should i gear to a 4:56?

if its a daily driver then 4.10 for 33s. 4.56 for 35s. If its a trail only rig, you would want to look into going a size lower. for example with 33s on a trail only rig 4.56 would be good, with 35s 4.88 or 5.13s etc...

For 35" tires and having an automatic I would go with 4.10s or 4.56 gears. 4.88 gears are too tall for an automatic since you don't have that 5th gear that the standards have. If you DD yours and use the highway a lot 4.10s will give you the best gas mileage since you'll be able to keep your RPMs a little lower. If you are 50/50 or more towards the wheeling end of things the 4.56 gears will get you better torque, but you'll suffer a little bit with your gas mileage and probably be around the 3k RPM range at 70mph on the highway. I think Nate has 4.10s in his XJ and is planning to go to 35s.

Adam, I can't remember if you have a 6spd or an automatic, but they are completely different when it comes to highway driving. If you do have the 6spd try driving 70mph in 4th gear and you'll be closer in the RPM range to what he will experience. I believe even with an automatic I would probably go to 4.56 gear though. I would only do 65mph on the highway rather than 75mph to help with gas mileage a little bit.

yea i have a auto, but recently ive just been driving in 3 rd gear cause it's more peppy and don't have to worry about overdrive

I've been running 4.56's with 33's/auto for a while now & it's not bad. Going to 35's soon.

Well, I'm running a 5spd with 3.73 gear currently and am going to 4.56 gears. With a 6th gear you could probably get away with 4.88 gears without hurting your mileage too bad and I think the 6spd has a slightly lower ratio than my 5spd so you would have a good crawl combination.

the aw4 thats in your xj

Gear Ratios for the AW4 are 2.80, 1.53, 1.00 & .75.

The AW4 is a light to medium-duty transmission. Ours, our callers' and customers' experiences with the AW4 are less than stellar. They have a tendency to generate excessive amounts of heat, and are known for unnecessarily consuming more engine power than some other automatics. The shift points in the AW4 feel odd, and the spotty engagment of the lockup torque converter is idiosyncratic.

But, it is a decent transmission, and if kept cool and maintained, it can offer good service within its range.

Aisin-Warner AX15 Transmission

Gear ratios for the AX15 are: 3.83, 2.33, 1.44, 1.00, 0.79, for first through fifth, respectively.

In Summary
The AX15 is one of the good successes for Jeep transmissions. They are generally regarded as the best five-speed transmission ever installed into a Jeep. They are a worthwhile gearbox, and remain in production by Aisin-Warner.

in order for adam to get rolling on 35's you will need at least 4.10's imho and a few more inches of lift but you could join the dark side add break out the saws all for a little trimming  correction alot of trimming

i have the stock 3:55's with 33x12.5 mt's and i don't really notice a big problem on or off the road. i still out climb alot of ppl out here on the rocks. then again i have a new intake but i don't see that having a big difference.

yea i know to stop at a 35 on the dana 30. Since this is my DD, im not going over a 35'' tire. I want my jeep to be good on the street, and good offroad, so im leaning to the 4:56.

How bad will it be with 33's and 4:56's, will my gas mile suffer badly? and this setup will only be temporary.

well it won't be to bad in town it will accelerate like a bat out of hell off the line on the highway you will be pushing about 2500 at 65 mph
