99 Explorer 8.8 rear
« on: February 23, 2015, 07:12:23 PM »
Well Alright, I finally picked up my new rear diff from a 99 Explorer, 4.10 open. I have a 4.10 dana 30 almost ready for install. I am getting ready to order Calipers and Swap kit from ECGS along with a 1330 flange adapter. Now if the weather would get better and my garage would get bigger we would be all set LOL.

Did you weld the tubes to the center section yet? if you are ordering from ECGS you should pick up a spartan locker from them too!

Good job, make sure you weld the tubes, get a locker and a SOLID dif cover, then all you need is to attend a "drive like rock" training session. Also before you put the 30 in make up some C gussets like rocks yj and my fathers yj have, also 97+ shafts would be worth putting in so you don't have to worry as much.

Ok so I finally just ordered my Barnes 4WD 8.8 install kit with a nice little 10% discount. Ed and I cut the old brackets and such off 2 weeks ago and cleaned the tubes up. I have an Aussie locker ready to be installed in that bad larry. Ordering the Solid Diff cover also in a few minutes.

Chuck, as you know I'm in the same boat as your right now with the swap.  What made you decide on the Aussie locker?  I have a non selectable in the Dana 30 I'm installing so I'm thinking I mine as well do the Aussie but have hear bad reviews about non-selectable.

I have heard good things about lunchbox type lockers, and I have seen Rock's in action. Take a look at the video's and testimonials on the Lokka website. I do believe there are a few guys here in the club that run these type of lockers and are happy with them. Do you have your 8.8 all cleaned up and ready to go?

They do make noise and sometimes lock on road when turning. What makes them good is there cheep. E lockers and ARB"s are the best but very expensive. If u can deal with the small issues that auto lockers do then u will be fine. Off road an auto locker is very tough and perform as well as selectables.

I agree with what Bob said above. If I could afford only one selectable it would be for the front axle. I've never had a problem with the rear axle with Detroits or Aussies, but an auto locker in the front can be very unpredictable when using 4x4 on a snowy road. The tires need to have a little traction in order to ratchet and differentiate and I have had then lock in the middle of a turn in the past, which makes you continue going straight.

Alright, good to know.  My front already has an auto locker.  I'll most likely be going to an auto for the rear.  My 8.8 is almost ready to go, just need to finish cleaning it up.  I'll do a locker before the install though and am still not really in a rush

Ok so I just ordered a Lokka dana 30 locker and already have the Aussie 8.8 locker ready to be installed. Now I just need to find a bigger garage and a lift would help LOL.

Way to go Chuck. You'll enjoy it. I have the garage and no time. I need to find time. Just as a side note, I'm picking up an ARB and front diff cover tonight. Both previously purchased, but NIB.
