Toyota 8" in an Xj.

So any one who has an ifs 8" or is framillar with them can you tell me if there is 47 inches between your backing plates? I know the distance between the outer edges of the 8.25 perches in my Xj are 46". I am contemplating this swap for my jeep for better clearance and 3rd member awesomeness.

51" from inside of both brake backing plates. As you know the axles shafts on the 8" axle are very strong the weak point is indeed the 8" ring gear. And although it holds up very well on a Toyota mini truck it may not be the best choice for a heavier xj. And not all 8" axles are the same, the stronger ones are the v-6 third member (more ribs on the center section). Not even all Tacoma axles are the same. Wont get into all of them on this thread. You would be better of finding an 8.8 from an explorer. I forget which years come with disk brakes but they are plentiful and pretty cheap.

oh yeah, and you wanted an ls swap didn't you luke? Might be 9" time, matching bolt pattern you can get the same width as what you have.

Mitch I was going off what you had said. NOT an 8.8 fan. If I have to go that route then I shall.
Or isuzu 12b is another valid option. I was going off the idea of them surviving in v8 powered yotas
I know about the difference between the v6 doffs and what not. I am also thinking of a 9.5 out of a land cruiser. My next rear end will not be a rock magnet, and will be better than an 8.25 and yes I am thinking of a 6.0 or 5.3 ls swap.

Yeah I actually didn't know about the ring gear issue. They are good axles and with some simple stuff the housings could handle the xjness above it but the shafts shouldn't be an issue and if they are chromolys never are a bad idea. But you still have the ring gear issue. I remember seeing a build ( I believe it was on cherokee forum) a guy used 8's under an xj not sure how it worked out but when he sold the xj of still had the Yota axles in it. Once again that's not behind a 5.3 or 6.0 though.

And you know how I drive  :o I am thinking zuzu 12B it has a beef ring and pinion and the shafts seem like they will work.

Or you can just stop being a clam and get a 9" or better yet get 37-40s and a have better clearence overall. Or just accept the fact that your gonna catch your diff no matter what

Even I catch my diffs from time to time... and my tires don't really squat at 6-8psi.

Well the executive decision was made sterling 10.5 it is.
