35's with 4.10

First off I apologize if I missed this, but I spent 2 hours searching different forums (instead of working  ;D) and didn't find a clear answer.

I have a 2007 JKU X, Auto, 4.10, D 44 rear, D30 front (w/ eaton e-locker), TF 2.5" coil lift. I currently have 285/70/R17 Cooper AT 3's (closest to a 33" I could get on stock wheels per the garage). I got a good deal on a set of Pro Comp 17x9 wheels. Can I run 35" tires safely?
These would be mostly trail tires/wheels (mostly trails and mud, no rock climbing).
I have a superchips tuner so I can make adjustments as well.

It won't be the best but it will do I ran 38's with 3.31gears for a year so since they are trail only iI say go for it

The auto is more forgiving than a manual. It won't be a great rock crawler, but it doesn't sound like you want that anyway so you should be fine. If you find you want a little more lower end after you put the 35s on you can save money for that upgrade later.

It will be under powered but you will be fine for a daily driver. My 09 Rubi unlimmited 6 speed did ok on 35's with 4.10's but regeared to 5.13's later and now much better. No matter how u look at it the 3.8L is a gutless turd. The new 3.6L is so much better the you could run 37's with 3.21's and still have plenty of power. Just not a good crawl ratio.

Awesome! Thank you very much! The 3.8 does feel sluggish but thankfully the tuner helped a bit. Even with the 33's if I drive "easily" I get decent fuel mileage.

Also a cold air intake system will help on the power from 3500 rpms and up. It worked for mine. I installed the AEM system. As for fuel mileage im down to 12 mpg durring the winter months. Gets better in the summer. They use blended fuels around sept to after march for better emmisions durring the colder months and that does not do well with mpg.

My 2 cents:
I'm running 35's with 4.10's on a manual and the only problems on the trails are due to driver error.   ::)
On the highway, I have to downshift on hills, but can roll along pretty well at 80 mph (but don't tell the Po Po)...  And I have a snorkel, which seems to decrease power a bit in really cold or hot weather...
The little minivan engine that could!

35's with 4.10 gears, as everyone said,is ok for power.  I would be more worried about the front axle shafts with the locker.  I read some where a few years back that the biggest tire to run on the D30 with a locker is 33's, and to run 35's with a locker it is highly recomended to run alloy shafts.  Just ask Rock how many shafts he snaped with 35's and a locker  ;)

^this if very true. but. it may all depend on your driving style. ive been locked on 35s for a long time now and i only had one issue and that was twisting the ear on the inner side off the shaft. in wich i didnt notice until the cap flew off down the highway heading back to camp

As I understand it, the torque limit for stock axles is too often reached with 35's. I myself just got a locker with my 33's. I am shopping axles as well. It's not a matter of if, even with 33's, it's when.

I run 36's with 4:10's but like the JK owners said it will be a little under poweered but the Auto will make up for that.

The D30 is a good axle and once I put Chromemoly shafts in mine it has held up find to the abuse i give it, but the JKU is so much heavier and the newer D30's & 44's are made a little weaker, you will need to be easy on the skinny petal and start thinking about putting in sleeves or a truss on it. the thing you have to watch out for is to not bounce the front end up in the air until you strengthen it!!

My truck is automatic.

I would also be concerned about the 2.5 inch lift clearing 35's. In my truck I have about 5 inches of combined suspension and body lift and I still rub fenders.....and I also trimmed the fenders!

So with your truck being an auto, an engine that has plenty of power and 4.10's the tork converter makes it feel better. Your gas mileage would improve if you installed 4.88 along with much better crawl ratio.
As for clearance the JK's clear fine with just 2.5 in lift. Extended bump stops are the key thoe. Just ask ChiefKP. He is on his 2nd JK with the same Tera Flex 2.5in lift and 35's W/O any rubing issues.
