Craigslist Scams
« on: September 26, 2011, 02:49:21 PM »
I did pretty good selling a John Deere tractor, weed eater, leaf blower and push mower on Craigslist this past week, but I put my Jeep on there and am getting stuff like this:

Thanks,I would have loved to come and check it out but am currently
not in the states for now.And thats why am arranging for a pick up.i
think i can trust you..I am buying this  1998 Wrangler (TJ), for dad
as i promised him early this year and i am a Network instillation
manager It hard to make a phone calls and visiting of website are
restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you
an email regarding it.I really want it to be a surprise for my dad so
i wont let him know anything about it until it gets delivered to him,
i am sure he will be more than happy with it.i don't have access to my
bank account online as i don't have internet banking, The transaction
will be made via PayPal for the safety of both.i will need your name
and address including your paypal email address for the payment.I will
like to know if the tittle is clear or you still have a loan to pay on
it. Thanks and God Bless.

What do you mean Will? I wasn't even going to send a reply back. The first email i received from this person asked if they could come look at the Jeep and I said sure, just let me know what time you want to come out. This is the response I got back from them, which makes me suspicious since the first email sounded like they were going to come out to see it. This guy is a network installation manager and doesn't have online banking at all? The entire reply looks fishy to me.

I should have added that if they are spammers, don't reply.

Most replies to a for sale post are legit but it depends on what you are selling, the higher the $$$ amount the more spam replies you will get.
A lot of the simple replies like " is this still for sale"  "do you still have this" are spammers just trying to get your email address. By Googling the email address you can weed out a lot of them.

Their first email was " Is this still for sale and can I come see it". That was it. That's why I think they are scammers, especially when they come back with they are out of the country and will have somebody pick it up to deliver it.

I will often ask if an item is still for sale.

but I usually will name the item when i ask.....e.g. is the huge stack of porn still for sale?"
but i also leave a phone number.

roger, you are right....that is a scam i have seen dozens of times. don't respond.
