a/c pulley/clutch is shot
« on: June 17, 2010, 09:50:01 AM »
Ac still works when its on. When its off the pulley slips like crazy and makes an awful noise. Looks like no local parts stores carry just the pulley/clutch, have to buy the whole $500 part. However if I get the part number I should be able to find just the clutch on ebay. Anyone had to do this yet?

Haha exhaust could use a little welding. Got a new tail light yesterday. Skid plate only came off cuz it came with crap self tapping bolts and I had to take them out to put in a new down pipe. They just didn't hold after being removed

Same thing happened on Jess' liberty.  I replaced the compressor, filter and condensor.  The key is the cost of the recharge.

ok, back on topic. I picked up a whole compressor from the junk yard, mostly for the pulley/clutch. I am now reading that there is a special tool required to remove the clutch from the compressor. I'd really like to just swap them out, and leave my compressor intact. Anyone know how to do this or who would have the tool. The dealership refuses to do it. They want me to buy a $900 compressor.

you are going to have to do it out off the jeep so ask a shop if they will suck out the freon that is in there and you might be able to just swap compressors

Have you tried to rent a tool from Advance or Auto Zone.  If you break into the system, you will need to have the system vacummed to pull out any moisture and then recharged.  I think the vauccum and recharge cost around $100 so if you can prevent breaking into the system you will save a few $$$.
