Track Bar Axle Mount
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:30:17 PM »
The guys at EVB found what looks to be the main culprit in why my Jeep is not tracking right, understeering and is downright squirrelly on the road. The hole in the track bar mount on the axle side is wallowed out and you can see where it is moving what appears to be over 1/4". They said it is too far gone to try to weld washers on it so I'm looking at replacing the mount. I've found one from RE and from Rustys, but they say they are for a TJ and do not mention XJs at all and that may be what I need since I have a XJ axle in the front end.

Nate, can you look at that TJ axle that I have at your place and compare the track bar axle mount to the one in your XJ and see if there is any difference? If there is I may need to switch to a TJ style mount. Thanks

as long as your trac bar is parall to the drag link you will be fine i see no reason why a trac bar mount from i tj would not work on an xj the tubes are the same so as long as the angles are the same you will not have a problem
And if your angles are wrong that may be part me the reason your hole got messed up

That's what I'm thinking. There may be a slight difference in the mounting positions between the XJ and TJ and that difference is what has messed up the hole in the XJ axle under my TJ.

I found this thread over on Jeepforum for repairing the track bar mount on the axle so this is probably what I'll do. I'm going to try unbolting it later this week to see how bad the hole looks and make sure the bracket isn't twisted at all. Ed or Nate, since we have activities this coming Saturday maybe I can schedule with one of you two for the weekend of the 26th to do some welding. I don't want to let it go too long since it is progressively getting harder to keep on the road and between the lines.

also what style of trac bar are you running does it have hiems on one end and a bushing on the other if it does i would possibly concider changing the trac bar out for one that has bushings on the ends because they will absorb an impact a lot better that a hiem joint will aka not break stuff

i would not buy a the mount from what i saw in the pics that would be pretty easy to fab and since you are making it you will not have to modify a pre bought bracket to make it work i would make some thing similer to this

don't laugh at my ms paint drawing

but i would add some gussets to the tube and do any thing you could to beef it up from all that i have seen on xj and tj brakets trac bar brakets and lca's are real weak

It's the axle side that is bad. The frame side has no movement at all. I have a RE adustible track bar in it that has a bushing on the axle end and heim joint on the frame side. I already have a new track bar bushing to install since I had assumed it was the bushing before seeing the wallowed out hole. I also bought new control arm bushings for all the way around my Jeep at the same time, but if this cures 80%+ of the handling issues I'll wait until after school is done in July before I start taking all of the controls arms off to replace bushings.
