i need to stop being so cheap...
« on: August 17, 2009, 07:46:47 PM »
so i did the radiator and t-stat in the jimmy last week, and today at the light i noticed a little coolant smell.  turns out that the upper radiator hose sprung a leak.  i had the system apart last week and should have changed the hoses when i noticed them "squishy", so in order to save $40 on hoses, now i have to spend the $ anyway, and also buy more coolant!!  UGH!!!  i really should stop being so damn cheap.

I think I convinced Roger to replace his upper and lower hoses when his radiator comes in.  I also recomended replacing the thermostat while he is in there, cheap and easy to do when the system is already drained.  Since he bought it used, there is no telling if/when it was replaced.

My new radiator was on the front door step when I got home tonight. After talking with Kirk I'm going to replace the upper and lower hoses and the thermostat while I'm in there. I'll pick up my parts tomorrow after work and plan on wrenching on Friday afternoon.

don't forget to check the fan clutch, i've seen more then one fail and send the fan through the new radiator.  if there is any lateral movement in it then you should consider a replacement.

Good Call.  If we do find it looks bad or marginal, how difficult is it to change.  It doesn't look to bad, just a few bolts to pull the fan assembly from the water pump, but how does the clutch part come off, is it just a few bolts?  I've never really looked at it too hard.
