cheap rear disc brake up grade
« on: December 20, 2009, 12:26:53 AM »
i just got done helping with a disc brake install on a 99 tj with a dana 35 what we did was take all of the brake parts off of a 96? grand with rear disc unbolted the backing plates and swapped every thing out i wish i could have taken pics but i got a broken phone i am pretty sure that this will work on an 8.25 cause when we did duece's 8.25 swap we used his 93 d35 drum break parts on the 97 8.25 since the d35 did not change much in the use of the wranglers and they don't ask what type of axle you have when you buy rear brakes i believe it will work on the d44 in the tj's but you may have to get the disc brakes off a d44A i am not absolutely sure on this

with the e-brakes we used the grand e-brake cables and put that in to the stock tj tensioner

for the brake lines we used the stock grand lines and bent them to fit since the grand has a little soft line running of the caliper to the tube of the axle and then fastened the mounting tab to the suspension brackets with a self tapping screw

and the axle shafts was the stock tj

I know the 2003+ Jeep Liberty's have rear disk that are a bolt on for the 8.25.  The Liberty shares the 8.25 with the XJ's.

Ok so I'll be at your house as soon as the snow clears to jack them from your wife's Liberty  ;D

Since the 8.25 has a larger tube you do have to do some grinding on the inside of the backing plate to get it to fit when taking the brakes off a D35 out of Grand Cherokee. Kirk is right though, the Liberties from 2003+ all have 8.25 axles with disc brakes so that is a completely straight forward swap.

Jess' Liberty is an 02, so the only year with out the rear disk.  I have been looking at the conversion and if I can find the parts at a decent price I will upgrade her Jeep.

ahh i see. seems really simple, It would be worth it for my rig though. Just always a pain when dealing with drums. But they come apart a lot easier than go together.
