I am not sure how much is involved with a CJ7, but the NV4500 is a very stout manual transmission, and fairly easy to find in a junk yard.  Advance Adapters has everything needed to make it work, but you might need to lengthen/ shorten your drive shafts.  Another option is the NV3500 found in the newer TJ's, but they are hard to find and pretty expensive.

I'm not sure about how some of the newer transmissions will bolt up, but I had a T176 4-speed in my 86 CJ7. It is a very stout trans compared to the T4 and T5 and will be a direct swap without modifications. The downside is you lose a 5th gear. If you want to gear it lower I know a few guys that were running T18s with the granny first gear. Those do require an adaptor of some sort though.
