Title: TJ fuel pump??
Post by: smaug1911 on May 28, 2014, 04:32:19 AM
I've been working on a 97 TJ. Long story, short......it won't start. Good battery, alternator, and starter. It turns over, but won' start. Been sitting for 5 years so I am thinking fuel pump is dead. Any other possibilities come to mind? This job looks like one I really don't want to get involved in with give the amount of rust on the bolts that hold it in place.

Mice love chewing wires. Check for fuel pressuse of the test port on the fuel rail. Then pull a plug wire. Put a known good plug into it. Lay it against the block and have someone crank it over. Look for a good healthy spark.

maybe you could come over after the meeting Tuesday..... ;)
Also, I don't have tools to test fuel pressure.

I don't have tools to test fuel pressure.

Just find the port, should have a plastic cap screwed on it and press the Schrader valve, with the key off, if gas squirts out you have pressure. cycle the key on for a few second and test it again, with the key off. if it squirts again most likely the pump is ok.

You can remove the driver rear tire and you should be able to look in over the tank to inspect the wires. might have to move the plastic inner fender.

I pressed the Schrader valve all the way in. NO fuel pressure

Kick the gas tank as hard as you can wile someone is trying to start it. Sometimes the fuel pump gets stuck. If it starts then it will need a new fuel pump. Sounds stupid but used to work for me many times.

Try what Bob said, I've seen it work! if it starts even a little, at least you know it's the pump. If you don't want to remove the tank you can always cut a whole in the floor and patch it after you change out the pump.
