Title: Cherokee Suspension party!
Post by: RnnngTrails on May 10, 2008, 03:03:13 AM
My suspension and tires came in today. It was like christmas in May... Now I know how you all must feel when you get a lot of new stuff for your rigs. lol anyway.. I could use a hand putting it in if anybody is interested. It doesn't have to be right away. (I mean I would like it done yesterday of course..) But I'm not in any kind of rush. I just would like to have it done before May 26 because I'm flying out to San Diego for a few days and on June 1st driving to Charleston. The plan was to take the jeep and i think 30 hours on the highway should give the suspension a pretty nice "break in". So, anybodys ideas? How long does this kind of thing usually take? Dates/Times? I'll supply any meals that may occur while we're working.

I'd wait till I got back from that trip

side of the highway halfway to somewhere is not where you want to find out you forgot to torque a nut down on some vital suspesion peice

trust me I've had to limp to a parts store at 0 dark 30  and nap in my car till it opened once or twice for similar reasons

Actually, I agree. Mostly because of the "halfway to somewhere when something springs" lol. Better to be about town when that happens ;) Cause you will have the guys to call on for help if it occurs, as opposed to AAA who will just blink at your suspension problems halfway down the East Coast lol!

yeah.. i've already dealt with the lack of torque thing.. that can really bite you in the back sometimes.. Jenn and I may have possibly lost a Caliper retainer bolt off the right rear caliper which caused it to swing down onto the rotor. AAA came and looked at it and was like.. that sucks, but it's 2 in the morning and i cant go more than 10 miles to tow you anywhere. (not to helpful when you're at exit 66 on 95) ok.. It can all sit till i get home i guess. i'm just at that anxious point where i want to see it in and how it is.

have you made any progress on this yet?

havent started since everyone was saying it'd be better to wait till after june when i got back from charleston. However, I dont think i'm going to take the cherokee to charleston. I convinced Jenn to take the volvo instead. SO if anybody is free on any day/afternoon, I'm all about starting this yesterday.  :D

Scott and I won't be there, this weekend is stacked with stuff...massages, bridal showers, cruise night, and classes.

I think it's pretty busy for everyone, so I hope you don't think the club is leaving you in the dust with not helping *hugs* I am sure there would be more people offering if they had the time!  ;)

your muffler will have to be either welded back to the peice that broke off or replaced.  just ensure you remove your down-stream O2 sensor before welding!

I can weld pretty decent however, that won't last long if it gets welded. Buy a new muffler...Just my $.02

now that i think about it, you are right, Scott.  If it was rusted bad enough to get knocked clean off by a rock, its too bad to repair.  spend $25 on a turbo muffler and you will be all set!

Ok so I got an itch tonight and couldn't look at all the stuff anymore and decided to start putting it in in the driveway. Here's the progress so far.

passenger side upper control arm bolt got snagged.. This is my current hold up.

I'll be working on this till sunday every day after work till it's done. Any help would be appreciated.

PM me for address if you feel like lending a hand.

P.S. for those who didnt know, if you're sitting at the base gas station waiting for your friend to fill up, and you answer your phone, dont roll forward because that's considered "operating a motor vehicle while on a cell phone" and carries a mandatory 30 day base sticker suspension.  :-[

Front is done. Started the rear and successfully sheared the heads off two of the rear shock bolts. (1 on each side)anybody who's good with fixing that kind of thing... HELP!! CnoteTJ is over helping out and other than that, things are coming along nicely.

So at close of business, We have the entire front done, the leafs and shocks out of the rear and the axle dropped. The shocks however had all 4 mounting bolts sheared off the body.  :-[ I've heard easy out. I figure I'll give that a try tomorrow. If that doesnt work and I have to drill them, do you think I could get a hand welding a plate up, Scott, so that I can tap it and try again if that's the case...? Starting again on Friday, hopefully no later than 11AM. Call If you're interested. So far its CnoteTJ and I and possibly BayouGold Depending on how his shift work went. I'd post Pictures of the progress, but CnoteTJ has my camera in his glovebox. :-\

Gary, the shock bolt thing happened to me too.  Here's what to do...

Get some grade 8 bolts and weld them like studs hanging down over the old bolt holes.  Make sure you only tack them on at first.  Do a test fit with the shock to make sure things line up right.  Then do the final burn.  Make sure you place a water soaked towel over your gas tank, and if you can, make sure you have a full tank of gas.  Then, you just put the shock up, add a couple of nuts with lock washers and tighten it up.

I would offer to help, but I'm still fighting with my own shocks.  I hurt my back pretty bad last night and had to stop.  If I can't get them in today, I'll be out for tomorrow. :-\

Unfortunately, I'm leaving this morning to go to Mohawk for the weekend so I'll be back Monday sometime. Did you happen to soak everything with PB Blaster or WD-40 a few days before you started? I have never heard of so many bolts breaking on a fairly newer vehicle...

I hurt my back pretty bad last night and had to stop.

From lifting those tires I bet...

No, I was laying on my back trying to compress the shock.  I thought I was using my arms and my weight, but I guess not.  After I let go of the shock, I started to get a sharp pain around my shoulder blade.  Then it just got worse until it hurt to breath.  I stopped and went inside, took a big motrin, and laid on the couch.  After a couple of hours it got better.  Today it still hurts a little when I move certain ways, but I took some more motrin.  I think I just pulled a muscle.  It's ok, I was getting frustrated anyway.  Now I've had time to rethink my strategy!   ;D

Well we sort of finished our shift work. Now we have a team down trying to finish up so we won't be here this weekend. they chipped the side of a winchester plug & are seeing if there is a new one we can get. So my team is on standby at the shop right now. If we get a plug I'll be working late(r) today. If not it'll be this afternoon sometime. I'll call you if we get early.  :-\

Ok so It's all done and we had some rather unorthodox methods to fixing the sheared bolt problems. Worked wonders though and got the job done. I'll post up pictures tomorrow when It's daylight.

The bolts were stuck in the nuts really good. Despite all the PB Blaster and the huge drill holes for the easy out, it wasnt happening. I wound up hammering a center punch through them and breaking the welded nuts off the back. They were easily accessed through a hole in the shock mount plate. Getting new nuts on the back is NOT easy to do by hand. So be creative. Use a 3/8 inch nut and bolt with a washer on the bolt. Take a 1/2 inch box/open end wrench. Put some Nuke Red tape on the box side so that the wrench angles up when the nut is flat. Stick the nut in the box and to the tape.  you can use this in the plate hole to get to where the bolts come through. Once you get the screw to engage 2 or 3 threads break the wrench off and turn it around to the open end. If you dont, you'll tighten the bolt and the wrench will be stuck. Tighten em up and move on to the next one. Works great!  Hope that helps anyone who needs this in the future.
