Title: TJ lift advice?
Post by: smaug1911 on February 10, 2014, 02:59:57 PM
Need some input on a lift for the TJ I am working on.
They owners would like a 3" lift. They want to clear 33's.
Do they need 3" or will less do it?
Also, they will NEVER wheel this thing. It is for looks only. So most economical is what I am looking for.
Any suggestions on what way to do this...coil spacers, etc?

There are many spacer kits out there. Check out Tera Flex.

I had a 3.5" RE lift along with a 1" body lift and could have put 35s easy with no rubbing at all when wheeling. For 33s with no wheeling you could probably get by with 2" coil spacers. I'm just not sure if you'll throw something else off by using stock control arms and not being able to adjust things a little under there.

TJ's can fit 33's on a 3" lift no problem.  Cheapest way would be to do a 2" spacer, 1" to 1-1/2" body lift, drop track bar brackets, and a motor mount lift to correct the drive line angle.

Stock arms would not be preferred, but its doable.  It will, all be it very slightly, shorten the wheel base a little with stock arms, but an alignment would still be possible.

For street use only, I would try just a 2" spacer lift.  I know a lot of people who run 31's with no lift and no problems on the street.  Since a 33"  tire only has a 1" radius height differnce from a 31" tire, a 2" lift shoud be enough.  Just get a kit with bump stop extensions.

Thats what I was thinking. Plus, after looking at those body mounts, I am not going anywhere near a body lift. Too much rust to contend with.
Any helpful pointers about removal of the exhaust manifold? It looks like alot of other stuff has to come out too for that job....intake manifold, power steering pump, etc
