Title: Lots of new toys on the way...
Post by: submrnman on November 22, 2011, 02:40:20 PM
So... after the Nov Trail Ride I took your advice and cancelled my body shop appointment for my insurance claim and just had the insurance company cut me the check.  Now, I am impatiently waiting all kinds of new parts for the Heep.  I was going to go with Gen-Right based on Gary's recommendation.  However, I scored a sweet deal on a boat load of Poison Spyder stuff, which saved me close to $500.  I was able to get Poison Spyder Tube Fenders, Rocker Knockers, Full Rear Crusher Corners with flares, and steering box skid for $1,100 shipped.  The guys at Poison Spyder hooked me up big time with a few awesome deals and a 20% miltary discount.  I couldn't beat it.  Still deciding on a front and rear bumper, though.  Luckily, I still have $1,300 of that insurance claim burning a hole in my pocket!  Next stop... SYE, Tom Woods and a Belly Up Skid.  ;D  What do you guys think?  Paint to match the red or flat black?

Very nice.  I'm glad you decided to go this route vice putting regular fenders on there.  I would paint it all either semi-gloss black or flat black.  Then, when you beat it up you can fix the paint easy.

I think your right inline with your plan for a Belly up skid, SYE, and CV Shaft.  Mine used to have a drop skid like you have now and it was easily the biggest cause of me getting hung up on something.

I would seriously consider a transmission/engine skid as well.  Undercover Fab makes some really nice stuff and have really good prices too.  They sell a combo kit that gives you an engine/transmission skid, belly up skid (depending on how high you want it you'll need a body lift too), and a really nice transmission mount.  I don't know for sure the transmission mount is avaliable for the YJ, but I think it is.  Anyways, with the combo they sell you can literally buy everything you need to do all of this including the SYE, shaft, skid, body lift (if needed), and engine mount lift (if needed) but at a discounted price for buying it all together.

I am using their ultra high clearance skid (its been heavily modified to clear my suspension) and their lowpro transmission mount.  I'd recommend them to anyone.

I checked out their site after I was at your place the other day.  I am gonna go with them for belly up kit and engine skid.  What was the site that had the Diff covers you have?

If somebody is looking for a D30 heavy duty diff cover I have a RuffStuffSpecialties D30 cover for sale for $60. Not sure which one Bill has, but this is half price from new if you want to save a little money. Here is a link. Mine is currently painted black.

For a daily driver I would paint to match, I've heard the red is easy to match.

For a belly up skid you are going to want a 1" body lift and a 1" motor mount lift.  There is not enough room in a YJ to go with a belly up skid without some cutting out of the floor.  Also, YJ's have the worst design ever for the exhaust.  Before getting an engine skid, you need to fix the exhaust so it wraps around the front of the oil pan like a TJ.  A YJ goes under the transmission and an engine skid will drop way down and you will sacrifice a lot of clearnace.  I made a custom pipe using a TJ head pipe as a starting point and a lot of cutting and welding.  If I had to do it agian, I would find a good exhaust shop and have them make one.  By the way, with the 1" motor mount lift, you will be surprised how much less you need a engine skid.  I wheel my Jeep pretty hard, and I don't have an engine skid yet.  I went with the Kilby belly up skid, and did away with the mid transmission mount.  I used all polly bushings and I have had no problems.  Also, make sure you install all of this and the SYE before ordering your drive shaft since it will change the lenght of the rear driveshaft by over an inch.  I went to overland driveshaft (in Montville) and bought a new lower half to make the driveshaft longer, but it was another $80 expense I could have avoided.  Good Luck and Looking forward to meeting you when I get back.

Jealous of the seats and harnesses Adam!

i just decided to get them since saturday my jeep is going to get the custom cage and me and the guy building it said if you want to do seats and now is the time so i don't have to add it later and i almost wish i got the bigger size cause the ones i got are the standard size and they are almost too small they say they are good up to a 36-38" waist and i have a 34" waist and they are almost too tight but i really don't want to move around that much in them

Fenders came last night.  I'm pumped I just need to get them painted and installed.  I was hoping to have them on the rig before the Toys for Tots run... Standby for tons of questions when I start the install.  I actually have one now... So, I got the Poison Spyder Rockers for a YJ with stock wheel opening... I think that based on the fact that I am putting Poison Spyder Tube fenders and Rear Crusher Corners on I may have needed the Rockers for a YJ with TJ Wheel Opening.  Any guidance?  It looks like they will fit just fine, but there is a notch on the forward end of the rocker to allow them to go around the stock YJ flares...

Need pic's to understand, if the front tube fenders have the built in flare the front of the rockers may be ok but they may overlap into the rear opening, the TJ has a bigger opening in the rear, so you may need to lay out the pieces to make sure it fits the way you want before painting them.

Got the fitment issue with the rockers resolved.  I called Poison Spyder... again very good customer service.  I just need to cut off the "tab" on the forward end of the rocker and they are good to go.  Bill, is your cutting torch working?  ;)

Thought I'd keep this thread going:

38x12.5x16.5 TSL's.  New they have 23/32" of tread.  I check these before buying them and all were 20/32" to 21/32".  Mounted on some basic steel wheels.  I figure I'll run them on those for a while and eventually get some recentered H1 Wheels with PVC insterts.  Got all five, mounted and balanced for $750.00.
