I know you are not going to do a motor swap this spring but when the time comes....
Screw the v-8 and it's 10 -12 mpg and all that weight and go with the 1.9 Volkswagen Turbo Diesel, wheel all day for a few $$ and get 30+ mpg on the road. With a bit of tuning it has a little more hp and torque than your 4.0 and weights about a 100 lbs less.

or just stroke the 4.0l
-
I'm glad you guys are thinking big. I'm just thinking that I need to finally replace the control arm bushings and do something with my steering to get it back on the road. ;D Although I do have a new set of springs to go all the way around it that might get put in also.

I would rather stroke a 4.0L(or Supercharged) like Bill's than go through all the trouble, time & money to install a VW TD in a Jeep. You can't beat the sound of the old classic V8 or newer LS motor. Screw the gas mileage.
So what do you want? The sound of a V8 ;D(drinking lots of gas) or a sewing machine ::)(knitting a sweater)

While I do agree that nothing beats the sound of a V8, I also think there are better alternatives out there. I have the supercharger and it is great. One day I would love to stoke it and bump it up to somewhere around 10 lbs of boost. That would be a blast and more power then I would ever need.
Now, if I was going to swap the engine I too would do a diesel swap. I just don't agree about which engine to use. The 4BT Cummins diesel is a 4 cylinder turbo diesel that will run forever and has tons of torque. The engine is built like a tank too. The VW diesels use powder metal connecting rods and you can only turn the boost so high before the whole thing goes boom. The cummins is built much stronger and offer a more usable torque curve for a trail rig. After all, were talking about a diesel that was meant to power a VW Golf compaired to one that was meant to power a Bread Truck. The 4BT even shares common GM or Ford bell patterns for use with common SM465 or T18 transmissions. There is a world of fun you could have with one.
Just a quick site I found about the swap. I didn't read it all the way, but I know people make and sell kits to make the 4BT and 6BT Cummins a direct swap into Ford trucks and Broncos. I am sure someone makes the same for a YJ/TJ/XJ maybe even a JK?

Good reading and fun all the same.
