Title: winches...
Post by: PaulW on August 13, 2009, 04:34:59 AM
thinking of building a front reciever for my jimmy that i could mount a winch into, then set up the truck to use it front or rear.  does anyone have any opinions on ramsey winches??  quadratech sells a 8500lb one for 400 seems like a good deal.  i'm also considering using the mount system for the zuki so i can have the winch for either vehicle.

Harbor Freight 8000lb. is $299 and I've pulled NUMEROUS times with it in all conditions and it worked great. I'll be buying one for the FJ as soon as I get my bumper built...If it ever burns out it's easy on the wallet for the replacement... But $400 bones isn't bad for a brand name winch...

Kevin posted this the other day in the vendor area on GL4x4. He's the owner of Jeeperz-Creeperz and a good friend of mine. Rugged Ridge is coming out with a line of winches and this one looks good. I like the idea of a larger motor so it doesn't have to work quite as hard.

JP mag did a winch shoot out a few months ago and they really likes the mile marker PE 8000, which sells on sale for $399.  They said it is slow (like the Harbor Freight) but pulls all day.  The Harbor Freight like Scott has on JD's Jeep, has been rumored to be a Mile Marker Re-badge.

a lot of us are running the smittybuilt, i've never had a problem.  it is $300 + 10 shipping at winchdepot.com.  never heard anything bad about it; save the $100 put it towards synth line

Eventually I'll get a winch for my TJ, but I can count on one hand how many times I've had to be winched or tugged in the last 5-6 years of wheelin. For the little bit of use it will ever see I won't mind having a slow one as long as its reliable for when I do need to use it.

You haven't had to get winched because the extra wheelbase of the XJ is better than a TJ... ;)

The extra wheelbase helps, but I'm also a fairly careful wheeler and try not to get myself into situations that I shouldn't be in to begin with.

I dont have my computer right now for photo evidence, but I know I have a picture of a certain blue XJ being winched out of a deep water crossing where it got snagged by "insert item x" and stuck grille deep in water. The high water pants of said XJ's owner was the best part.

I think that's the same spot where I took on a cab full of water and flooded out my wallet that was on the floor.  :-[

i've done that so many times, i can't even count how many times i've had to be pulled out.  i'm probably over 35 extractions in my wheeling career.

As soon as my household goods get shipped to my house (recent change of home port) I'll set up my computer and do that. I'm sure he remembers it. Go figure it was the only album on my webshots that i never finished loading...

I remember that extraction. We never did figure out what my XJ was hooked to under the water that wouldn't let me turn and go across.

It was a deep water crossing and my XJ got caught on something underwater that made it turn sideways. I couldn't get it straightened out so I had to get pulled. I was wearing shorts, but the water was several inches above my knees so I rolled my shorts up higher so they wouldn't get completely soaked while I was hooking up the strap.
