I know this might be a miniscule point of data but JD's lifted TJ with 3.73's got 17mpg when I drove it down here 2 weeks ago! Amazing considering it was loaded down with luggage, tools, and rolling on the 33's...

Thats really good. I am lucky to get 13 with my set up.

i managed 22mpg with 4.10's and a 5 speed with 32's on my last xj

does it help that much?

yes it does. automatics rob about 15-25% of your power through friction of the clutch plates, to move your vehicle. there's a lot of "slippage" inside an auto that make the engine work harder to maintain the same speed. standards are a "direct" drive system with no parts inside to rob horse power. that's why a standard is rated at higher hp at the wheels.
