Post by: nvrdun on April 28, 2009, 05:37:40 PM
Since im going up in tire size i need to re gear my CJ, should i go with 4.10 or 4.56 keep in mind that i still want to be able to cruise around in my rig! is not just a trail rig.
let me have it GO! ;)

4.10's would be good for you if you want to be able to drive it to and from trails without running at 3500 rpm at 65...

5.38's do it once and do it way overkill.

I have 35" BFG and I have 4.10 gears.  I don't have my speedo calibrated, but I would guess that at 65 mph in 5th gear I am at 2000 rpm, and in 4th gear (long hills) I am at 2400 rpm.  According to the charts in 4wd hardware 4.10 gears are best for gas milage with 35's, but 4.56 or 4.88 would be best for off road.

I had 3.73 gears with 35's and that sucked.  I am happy with the 4.10 gears........but since my Jeep is mostly a toy I would like to go to 4.88 gears in the future, but I have plenty of other stuff I would rather get right now.

i've run 33's on almost every gear ratio you can imagine that was ever in or made for xj's.  3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, the 4.88 were actually fine for me when going down the highway 70 at 2800 rpm was fine.  but for the 35's go at least 4.88.  it's better to overgear the axles and add an od in the driveline, then to have to re-do the axles again.
