Title: New project!!
Post by: PaulW on January 23, 2009, 08:35:56 PM
Well got this bitch cheap cuz a tree fell on it.  I actually have a clean title for it.  Hmm  how fun is this going to be.  I think some sawzall/welder/bender time is in order.  No lift, just sawzall, 33's, weld rear diff, small cage for good luck, and beat the snott out of it!!

I love the $500 beaters you dont have to worry about.  since it's a 2 door i have plenty of room for fender trimming.  it's got the 29 spline 8.25 in it all ready so all i have to do is weld it :D.  i'm hoping to keep the entire cost under 1200.  should be fairly capable when i'm done.  i already took the sway bars out and it flexes pretty good for a stock pos.

You'll want to cage in as much as you can and strengthen the floors. Being that it's a unibody it needs something to keep it from twisting. I have seen a pic of a guy that cut the top off an XJ without doing any strengthening and brought it up an RTI ramp. When he came back down the body didn't go back to straight at all and the whole thing had twisted in the middle like a pretzel.

I have a lot of 1.75" dom that i'm using for the cage.  the cage is going to be trial and error, and hopefully i'll get good enough with the bender to make one look nice.  i bought a tubing notcher and everything last week.

Like i said, my bed trimming is as near perfect as one can get, esp. since i was cutting on crumpled metal!

I'm wondering if there will actually be enough room to clear my 34's.  i picked up a set of ltb's tonight.  tomorrow i start with the sawzall and tubing.  as long as the sitter is here.

Here is an XJ for sale over on GL4x4 with a D44 front axle and 9" rear. You could always do something like this.
