ok so my right rear fender flare keeps coming off and now i can't get the bad boy to stay on. are extended ones worth the money? or should i just invest in some gorrila glue or something along those lines?

take them all out, sawzall all 4 fenders and run 32s. forget the lift.

you get a high tpi count saws all blade and you cut vertical slits about an inch or so apart all along the fender up to about were the lip ends and then you fold them in. Just have to be careful not to cut the welds i guess. Search jeepforum.com, there are tons of DIYs. I'm going to do this eventually.

no, i ripped them off when i got stuck b4 joining the club and hitting that tree. and i think it had bent one of them but i think it was just the crappy shop i took it to.

Since your biggest concern is the rear, I would start with the rear flairs and see how it looks. It might look a little strange with the back flairs in black and the fronts in Green, but you could paint the fronts a satin black and it would match pretty close. I would hold of on the fronts until you settle on a front bumper. Most of the rubbing in the front will come from steering not the wheel well. Plus if you screw up the back you just need a new body, the front fenders will still look ok ;D.

y? 3 inches of clearance for a lot cheaper then a lift, and you still keep all of your stock geometry and steering angles. you CAN'T loose.

We can knock it out on Saurday at my place. Around 1300 or so will be best. They are calling for rain, so I can move the kids toys and put my Jeep in the house garage and we can roll your XJ in the big garage. I have a 4" grinder that is small enough to make some good cuts, an air powered cut off wheel, a air powered nibbler, air saw, assorted files, assorted tin snips, and a welder in case we need to tack any seems together.
If you get a chance stop by Lowes or Home Depot and pick up a couple of 4" cut off discs, not grinding discs. There about $1- $1.50 each something like that. I think I might have some, but I'm not 100% sure. Also pick up some Rustoleum (Spell???) spray paint to cover the frest cut metal. Satin Black would probabaly look the best. If anyone else wants to come out you are more then welcome. I'm not sure if my skills alone are enough to overcome R.J.'s negative skills ;).

ok the idea is that we cut them up to that fold in the fenders that run down the entire body. but then the question is what do we do with the rear? because if you cut that high in the rear then your taking off like half the door.

most ppl it seems just use all 4 rear flares from a tj i've only been able to find 2 or 3 xj write ups with the acutal one we're going to do.

i've seen it done to a few rigs, and i've cut my own fenders, but never re-installed flares. i just left it cut and open.

After seening it donw both ways, I like the look of all rear flairs the best. The 97+ XJ's already have the side marker on the front of the fender and adding another one just looks like something was hacked up and pasted on there. After we do the rear flairs we can take a good look at the front ones and see if you'll like it. Worst case, you sell the front ones and find another set of rear ones to do the front. The rears get knocked off the easiest, so getting those done is the top priority.

To properls paint your fender will take a while. You will need to sand all the primer and re-prime all the paint. Then apply 2-3 coats of color, wait 24 hrs, 2-3 coats of clear, wet sand, and buff. In short, not an afternoons worth of work. If this is going to be used off road, I wouldn't dump $300 into a paint job, but I would atleast do it the right way.

Also get the nuts/bolts/washers needed. Here is a write up where they used Rubicon Rear fliars up front. Makes sense to use wider flairs up front since the front sticks out 1/2" or so further then the rear.

y even use flares?? just get rims with a negative offset so the tires aren't even in the wheel wells. youll be SET!!

ok so we put the rear flares on, painted the control arm brackets, took the rear bumper ends off and painted the bottom part black (gonna do a 2 tone like roger except mine is black) cleaned my throttle body out btw kirk the throttle response is scare now ;D. gonna try and get rubicon rear flares for the front. will definatly be able to fit 31's without a lift now.

Glad to hear the the TB clean paid off. I think the flairs look pretty good. It took a little time to figure out how to do it, but not bad.

The XJ design has the fronts stick out wider then the back. Using Rubi flairs up front make up for the differnece in the offset.

just lock it front and rear and leave the stock suspension. with 32's you won't have much flex, but it'll go through just about anything.

When ever your ready, I know what I'm doing for next time ;). The hardest part is trying to get a flat flair to match up to the curves of the XJ. XJ's look flat until you put a flat flair up to it. A lot of time with the Dremel, just kept taking a little at a time until I got it as close as possible. When we got done I hit some of the spots with the heat gun to smooth it out and put a little bend to it.
He gianed 1 1/4" all the way around. He could run 31's with no lift, if bigger bump stops were put on.

Just use the trim and bumper paint stuff like I did on my bumper and trim and they should look fine. As long as they are not cracked I vote to save your $$$ and but the used ones. They are going to get scratched when you take them off road any way.

I have a write up saved to my computer somewhere to do the fender trim, but to retain the stock flairs all the way around. That's what I'm thinking about doing. I kind of like the color matched flairs on my XJ.

not cool. haha that double wide was more expensive then some houses in our area. btw. i got my intake tube today and the filter going out to install it now.. pics to follow.

so rock-it lied.... following their isntructions the k&n filter i bought touched like 3" before the hood closed. so i had to let the tube droop down until it touched the A/C lines which generate no heat so i guess thats fine. it still seems like it should drop down another 1'4" but the hood closes with no problem it seems. tightening up the hose clamps after going for a ride i broke one of the them back to auto zone tomorrow. the good news: drove it around town abit and i can tell a different tone from the engine and with the hood popped you can hear the intake suck in the hair pretty clearly. before the intake i had what seemed like a 1-2 second throttle delay which really bothered me. with this on here it's down to less then a second. i noticed an increase dramatically in throttle response, acceleration, and maybe even abit of horse power. well worth the $112 for the tube and $50 for the air filter. wish it just fit abit better. anyways here are the pics.

I still love how they call it a "cold" air intake and it's pulling air from under the hood where it's about 250 degrees hotter then ambient air temp.

well it's on the opposite side of the exhaust mainfold so it's cooler than the other air box. but like i said. im not really a fan of how it sits in there. i've got it somewhat leaning on some hoses and the hood touches the wide end of the filter when the hood is closed.

That's where you are wrong. the factory air box pulls air in from in front by the grill.

Probably could have rigged something up for alot cheaper dude. Doesn't look particularly effective. But to each his own.

The XJ design is a little differnt then the YJ. Mine has a little bar welded to the bottom that slides into the cable guides for the throttle cable. My K&N was bigger then the Rocket filter and mine rubbed the bottom of the hood too. After a while the heat from the engine will cause the rubber on the filter to mold into place just fine. It might rub some of the paint away, and if that is a big deal, just put some tape under the hood. The only thing I can think of to make the tube fit a little better would be to flatten it out where it crosses the valve cover.
Paul is right, it is not a cold air intake, and thats why thay call it a "Rock-it Tube." The power comes from the larger volume of air flow, not the desnser cooler air. If it was a true cold air intake it would boost power by about 20 HP and this one claims 12 HP (???). K&N and Air Raid both make filters with a tube and a heat shield, but they cost over $250.
If the fit isn't right, call Rock-it. It has been a few years since I called them, but they were very helpfull when I bought my bigger throttle body.

So was I though untill last winter, always had european cars, first car was a 5 speed 93 saab 900s, then I had an 04 5 speed jetta, and then an 04 6 speed jetta gli. So this is not only my first automatic, but also my first 4x4.

well yeah it's running fine now. but one thing i've noticed is that my oil pressure went up abit. maybe because of how i had to connect the pcv sytem to the new intake?

There is a reason you don't see jeeps running around with hood scoops. You don't need it. Some people put vents in to help with heat, but thats about it. I wouldn't waste your time or your money. Although, I did see a cowl induction hood for an XJ on craigslist not long ago, that looked pretty BA.

get a jet chip, then call it a day. with the increased air going in and out of the motor you'll need the chip to re-program the computer to add more fuel, then call it a day. it'll be a lot faster then

For simplicity, strength, and 4 wheel disc, the 8.8 can't be beat. Plus there are TONS of parts available since the mustang crowd uses them.

I have to say, I didn't think the 35 would hold up in mine... but it lasted 3 months in the YJ after the motor swap, then I left.... I'm going to blow it up the first weekend I can! all are invited to attend. Though I don't know where it will be.
