Title: MPG Car

I am looking for a "beater car" I am looking for something to drive to and from work for around or under $1000. Anyone know of or have anything they want to sell? 9MPG just isn't fun.

If you can wait 2 years or so, you can have my aspire.  I reccomend looking for a Ford Aspire 5sp (i get 47mpg), a geo metro xfi 5spd (the 3 cylinder) (people get over 50 eash).  The key to getting good milage is the manual trans; the slush box in a econo-box has to be real sloppy to account for the power-2-weight ratios and only having 3 spds.  If you can score a VW TDI, that would be the best option; they can get 40-70mpg AND if you do a greese-car conversion, you can burn used veggie oil for free!!

I built a gas-powered bicycle over the winter.
MPG?.....between 50-200. ???

You built one too? I'm getting a hair over 100mpg and I've gone more than 500 miles on mine this summer. If I could figure out where the bike/walk entrance is to go from Groton to New London on I95 I'd be riding my bike to work everyday. Until I started working in New London I used to drive it everyday to the Groton office.

One word of caution, make sure what ever you buy will pass emissions.  I also recommend a common car, since a $1000 car will need parts some time and you don't want to be paying crazy prices for parts.  I had a 91 VW Jetta and I was getting 30 MPG.  I do NOT recommend any VW newer then 93 since the transmissions are know to break and they are very expensive.  Honda Civics and Accords are also a good choice, but I was told by the guy that I go to for emissions to avoid Nissan, Mazda, Suzuki, Kia, and be careful with Toyota's they are hit or miss. 

Living in SE CT I also recommend front wheel drive, much better for the days when it snows and you are already at work.

but if it snows, he has the jeep!  I never take the aspire in the snow, that's why i bought my truck!

More then once I have been caught at work with my Jetta when it started snowing.  Between duty days and unexpected snow storms I have come home twice in snow that was bad enough that mini vans were getting stuck on the hills to my house.  The little Jetta would go right up some pretty steep hill that had yet to be plowed.
