Title: stockish wheels/tires to borrow with 5x5.5 lug pattern
Post by: calvynandhobbs on September 21, 2016, 06:25:28 PM
I don't know how many of you know this or not, but there was supposedly an accident at an emissions center recently where a tire that stuck outside a fenderwell threw something off the tire and into a person so the DMV has now sent a memo to all emissions centers that they can no longer put a vehicle on a machine for the sniff test unless the tires are completely covered.

I got turned away at 2 different emissions places now so I'm looking to see if anybody has some 5x5.5 roller wheels and tires that I could throw on my YJ just for the test. Stock wheels should sit under the fenders and be legal. Otherwise I'm looking for some ridged plastic to put over/under my existing fenders to make them wider.

Rodger, you want to use the 33 that are on the CJ?

They are on steel rims 5.5 and are 10.5 wide tire,  Covered on the CJ

I'm tied up the rest of this week and the weekend, but next week I'll get hold of you and stop by. We can try putting one on and see if it pulls the tire in enough. I think it will work for the front, but may still be a little wide on the rear. I think I'm outside my fenders by 2.5" or so on the rear, but if your wheels have deeper backspacing than mine it might just work.

Neural backspacing but they are narrower than yours

I think mine are only 3.25" back spacing so that may work. I'll get hold of you Monday and see what day works best for you

Looks like I am going to have issues as well.. There has got to be a garage somewhere that doesn't care.

Ed, what year is yours? If it's OBD2 and just needs codes read you'll be fine. Only applies to those vehicles that require the wheel machine and sniffer.

;D  I like that and I actually have one in the rafters of the garage. If that's what it comes down to my YJ will have those if Tom's wheel's don't work.

Roger, call Joey Ameer at Raymond's garage and ask him if they can do the emissions test for you. Tell him I told you to call. He is a jeep guy, he feel's your pain.

Just called Joey and he said to borrow tires or put on temporary fenders for the test. He said the DMV just sent all emissions stations the memo and there is nothing he can do. The tests are on camera.

They had to put cameras on them due to all the cheeting at emissions stations back in the late 80's and 90's.
