ok after i bought my xj i noticed that where the lower control arm connects to the axle that the bracket is bent like a pretzel on the passenger side, i was also told that somebody in the club just replaced the bracket. i was wondering where u bought the part from and how strong of a welder i need to use to make it safe for the trail.
-
Rich, this question is for you. I told him that I thought you got your lower control arm mounts from Rustys, but was not sure.
-
ya you can get them from rustys. and a 130 amp mig should be enough.
-
ok, i'll have to put an order in for 1 on the next paycheck since they're $60. can anybody help me out with this, your not allowed to use a welder or anything like that at the auto shop on base so im kinda screwed at the moment.
-
Here is a link to when Rich fixed his. The "hardest" part is pulling the front axle out to get a good weld.

.... holy crap, i have no idea where or how im gonna be able to take the front axle off at.

you can burn it in the truck if you really try. i've done it before. if you can wait a few weeks till i get settled in my house then i'll be more then happy to get them in for ya. just pay for wire/gas and beer and we'll be all set.

ha, well considering that im only 19 i can't buy the beer but yeah i gotta put in an order for the one. i might as well replace the 2nd one while im at it shouldn't i?

they come as a set, both should be done at the same time. the only problem i found with the high strength replacements is now the axle tube has a tendency to bend since the control arm mounts no longer rip off. and believe me it's pretty easy to rip em off, i severed one a few years back on old florida road and had to tie my axle to the bumper with a chain to drive it out of the woods. i ended up driving it all the way home like that. and since your still young i guess we can get ya a cup of milk instead (http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e82/flexj/stupid%20shit/poke.gif). but seriously if you want to come by after i'm settled in then it's no problem. i'll have the lift and welder and everything set up within 2 weeks of my closing.
-
awesome sounds like a plan... chocolate milk plz. LOL! just leemme know when your all settled in.

we're supposed to be closing on the 1st. so next weekend is painting/moving into the house. 2nd week/weekend is moving all the crap out of the garage into the house. and hopefully as soon as the garage is empty i can get all of my tools and equipment from storage and go from there. i may not have the lift in for a few more weeks, but i'll definatly have the tall jack stands ready :P
-
hey man whats been going on? u still gonna be able to help me out with the lower control arm bracket in a week or 2?

No problem, let me know when your ready with the parts. I'm not sure if we're going to be in the hosue as soon as I wished because the mortgage company is jerkin me gerkin. But I have a garage in Cromwell we can use, or my buddy has a shop in bristol he'll let me use so we have access to the lift.
-
ok, paycheck comes friday. so i'll place an order on rusty's friday night. now i have to read up on those but i think/hope they come in a pair. finally got those stabilizer bushings replaced so im geeked that the xj doesn't wanna roll in turns anymore.

Ya it's a pair.

Sorry must have missed this post somewhere.....I just did mine umm two months ago. Its not difficult. Pulling the axle does make things easier...I disconnected everything from the axle side and pulled out the axle...placed it on some jackstands, removed and cleaned up the axle then had scott weld on the new bracket. Make sure you make marks on the axle before removing the old bracket....That way you know where to position the new ones....They are significantly bigger and work great.
The other benefit to taking out the axle is painting everything while its off the jeep. Make sure you put a couple coats of paint on the new brackets and welds.
Are you driving it while you wait for parts....dont do that. When that bracket goes it goes hard....damn near ripped the other side and the uppers off of mine when it happened and I was only going about 5 mph in the snow.
If you need any help let me know...
-
they're real easy to put in. i got cheap last time i ripped one off and just welded 1/4" plate to the outside of the stock mounts on my replacement axle. but reptile, my closing got bumped to the 29th, if you want to come out to bristol we can use my boys shop and just put the jeep up on the lift. it'll be so much easier even if we do pull the whole diff out.
-
You dont really need the lift...you can do it easy with a set of jackstands on the frame. make sure you have an extra set for the axle when you pull it out though...
-
i have been driving it, mudding it, everything is fine on it there are no problems it's just bent abit, i wanna put a 3 inch lift on it so i figured i needed to replace them b4 i did it.
-
You dont really need the lift...
need it no, but if you have it....
-
agree on the lift Paul....The danger is driving it. I wouldnt be driving that thing...mine bent a bit then broke alot. Thats how it happens. Be careful man. Once the thing starts to tear off the axle it goes quickly.

I snapped my lower control arm off on OFR. tied the axle to the bumper with a chain, finished the road and then drove it back to the town to wait for AAA. it handled fine, so I drove it all the way back to southington from northwest mass. probably not the smartest thing to do, but it made it. If he's been driving it, I hope one DRIVE TO BRISTOL TO USE THE LIFT TO FIX THE TRUCK AT MY FRIENDS SHOP isn't the camel's straw.
-
that would be my luck actually.
-
that would be my luck actually.
i have a tow truck there ;D
-
ha well that will work if worse comes to worse. i don't know if i should order them from rusty's or if bumper to bumper would have them.
-

rusty's. you can't even get them from the dealer. it's part of the housing only.
-
Rusty's man. The ones they carry are huge in comparison. I used to have a pic but I cant find it. Makes the stock ones look like sheet metal.
Once you put a lift on your going to want the extra protection cause then your dealing with death wiggle and the problem only gets worse. And death wiggle is a constant battle in cherokees. We can talk about that some more in another writeup. But it is a problem with lifting.

you had a wiggle?? mine felt like the whole truck was in a paint mixer! but yea start with beefing as much as you can!
-
order is in for them. said 10-14 business days. hope not as long. as soon as they get here im ready. i've also decided on a 3 inch lift from rusty's also. hope to buy that in a month. will need help with that more than likely.
-
Reptile did you see this? Saw it on craigs and posted it with you in mind. Can't beat that deal. even if u have to wait till u fix other stuff before you install it.

-
going by this it's a 3 inch for $350 and i can get the brand new 3 inch for $265 from ruty's
-
this one includes Front Lower Control Arms; Front Track Bar Bracket, but I'm running the same rusty's 3 inch your talking about. If you do that I would suggest finding some used leafs out of a newer XJ if yours sag. mine were toast. If you just get the add a leaf and not the spring packs your not gonna get a full 3 inches in the rear. I salvaged some from a 00 at the junk yard. worked out nicely.
-
i'll have to look into it. but guess what?........ THE BRACKETS CAME IN TODAY!!! YAY!!!!!! it'd be badass if we could install them tomorrow paul. im going in the morning to get those rims n tires n we could do it afterwards, if not i wont be back in connecticut until late monday night.

the part that sucks is that we kept tripping the breaker. half way through a bead...POP damn breaker. so the welds are ugly! strong but ugly.
-
ha, thought u wanted me to leave out the fact that u welded ugly beads? yeah i didn't get in bed til 4ish though..... good thing the navy doesn't believe in sleep and im used to it. ;D
-
ha, thought u wanted me to leave out the fact that u welded ugly beads?
ya but they won't bend. it would have been better if the damn breaker would have stayed on.
-
yeah it would have... half my night was spent resetting the breaker... but now i have those new tires on, i got the newer shocks off of that xj and a lower control arm. gonna put those on sometime this week and i'll be set. with those new tires it rides so much better thanks roger. thanks alot though paul, that job would have never gotten done without ur help man.

-
awww, u don't like working til 2am?
it cuts into valuable drinking time!
-
ha, u seemed to multitask pretty well while we were there. just have to do it another place so we don't have to whisper next time
-
well i got the other control arm in.. i think we did mount that bracket abit crooked cause i had to wedge that 1 in abit also. the shocks are proving to be a problem because i can't seem to hold it still and turn the top bolt at the same time, might need some assistance

When i get into the house we can straighten that mount out.
-
alright sounds good, i was able to make the new one fit but it's required a hammer. my buddy is gonna help me with the shocks Saturday morning.

might stop clunking after all
-
psh, i doubt it haha, with my luck it's been that weird ass steering box this whole time and if it is i have no f***ing clue whats wrong with it.
-
yo homie, try to keep the bad french to pg-13 level. thanks
-
my apologies. but anyways shocks are in... still clunks... no clue what it is now. i guess the next thing would be tie rods? im not sure. suggestions?
-
Has this Jeep been wheeled hard? Tie rods are easy to bend and then they hit other stuff, just ask Tim. My recomendation is to get the front end off the ground and supported with jack stands and then turn the wheel from side to side to find the problem.
-
it hasn't been wheeled hard at all actually, long story short is i bought it from a guy out here in feburary. the air bag light is on, the horn doesn't work, and all the cheaper suspension parts seem to have been replaced. also i noticed that lower control arm bracket was bent. so the only reasonable explanation is that thing was in a wreck.

you put in used shocks right?? did they come back up on theyre own when you had them out or did they stay collapsed??
-
both sets of the shocks came right back up. the old ones weren't even bad other than the fact that the bushing fell completely out of it.

well then i guess you need some tinker time to find the noise. is it quieter with the replacement shocks??
-
nope. it's getting louder now actually. it happens on turns. i think it's where the shaft connects to the steering box but idk how to check it for damage or anything.

Probably a bad u-joint

I agree. If it's clunking at turn it could be an axleshaft ujoint.
-
hm... it could be. i'll have to check it out on sunday when i go to put on the receiver

thats good learning experience for you. call me if you need help lol

Ujoints aren't very expensive, but the job is time consuming. You need to have someone turn the wheels back and forth while you're watching the ujoints to see if they have any play in them or at least inspect them before you go changing things out.
-
yeah aslong as paul can help me it should work since he knows what he's looking for. maybe i'll get lucky and it'll just be a tie rod or something.

U-joints are cheaper then Tie Rods. If it is a tie rod, locate a V8 ZJ in a wrecking yard, and get that set up instead of sinking $$ into the stock stuff. If it is U-joints, Alloy USA can't be beat and call Northridge for the best price. If you need U-joints NOW, go to autozone and get the Duralast Golds, they have a lifetime warranty, but no grease fittings. If it is a unit bearing, order it from www.roakauto.com, a lot cheaper then any place I have ever found.
If you are going to pull the axle shafts for U-joints, I also recommend outer axle seals. Northridge had them for $60, but check ebay also. They are a lot of work to put back in later.
I am glad to see you upgraded your sig with R.J.- you don't get to choose your nick name, it is chosen for you. ;)
-
hah thats very true. but now what do those seals do for me?
-
hah thats very true. but now what do those seals do for me?
they keep dirt out of the housing.
-
hah thats very true. but now what do those seals do for me?
Right now you have a plastic disc that does little more then keep good size pebbles out of the axle housing.

ya what he said

and they keep the fluid in the housing to. just as important. no fluid = bad day

nope the inner axle seals keep fluid in the housing, the outers just keep dirt out.

Alrighty then..... i stand corrected :o
