Title: Input Needed
Post by: calvynandhobbs on July 27, 2009, 03:55:38 AM
I was talking to my wife tonight and we are in the market for a vehicle for her and my son to drive. I just saw some information on the Cash for Clunkers program and I'm thinking about putting my XJ back to stock as cheaply as possible, trading it in for a whole lot more than its worth and using that money toward a vehicle for my wife. I would then turn around my buy a TJ and sell the parts off my XJ or I can just keep the parts off my XJ and buy a newer XJ to put them on, but I really miss taking the top and doors off like when I had my CJ7s. What do you guys think?

I know of a really sweet yellow TJ...Lifted, locked in the rear, rolling on 33's...custom bumpers and a winch even...Just a bit of a drive...LOL

Not sure if you know all the details on that program or not but if you go that route, it's mandatory they send whatever vehicle you are trading in, straight to the junkyard to get scraped....or crushed...Do you really want to see your rig go down that trail???

Now if you're in the market for a new ride...JD just bought a 2009 GMC Acadia...Pretty sweet crossover...

why not buy a tj anyway??  nothing wrong with having 2 rigs.  if you just want a pos to turn in then you can have my geo.  come get it out of my garage lol.

roger if you do that then doug is going to have to get a tj, and then we'll have to start all over with him in re-training.  but seriously, why not buy a tj anyway??  nothing wrong with having 2 rigs.  if you just want a pos to turn in then you can have my geo.  come get it out of my garage lol.

One of the rules of this program is that the vehicle has to be driveable and has to have been owned, registered and insured for a minimum of one year in order to qualify. They did this because people would go pick up a piece of junk for $300 and then try to trade it in for $4500. My XJ will never be worth more than $1500-$2000 to sell outright so I am looking at this as an excuse to get into something with a lot fewer miles. I like the TJs, but I have found some nice XJs for about half the price of a TJ so I may still go that route. The main thing is that my wife has to find a vehicle that she likes that qualifies for the program.

I ran across this XJ last night with only 93,000 miles. My bumpers and sliders would attach nicely.

I'd love to, but we are buying an economical car with the trade in money from my XJ. I have to buy something with cash so I don't have to have a 2nd car payment. I'm thinking up to $6k or so for whatever I buy.

they're are a lot of nice cars available for that price, you just have to know what you want and what you are looking for and they'll show up.

let me know when your ready to install it, those can be a little tricky if you haven't done one before, they require some extensive welding.

Yes you do. That is why I'm turning my XJ in to buy a new economical car for my wife. She doesn't like her Liberty anymore and my son is scared to drive it because it sits high and the steering is really tight. We'll get something new for my wife to drive and my son to learn to drive with and I'll spend some cash and buy myself a newer gas guzzling 4x4. We'll end up buying 2 vehicles in a weekend.

some companies are matching the cash for clunkers program.  I hear you can get a kia for under $5K after rebates.  Should be farily easy to come up w/ the cash for that

I just went to their website, but I don't see anything about them matching. Jan and Stuart are heading out to Jackson Road in Ann Arbor that has every vehicle dealership imaginable right in a row so I told them to stop into the Kia dealership to check it out. I love the Kia Soul commercials and I just looked at pics of the interior of one and it is really cool. I think I could even drive one.

If we end up doing this really quick I may end up bringing the Liberty out here for a little while until I find exactly what I want. I haven't looked that much at aftermarket wheeling accessories for it, but if it's out there I may just build it. I really would like to stay with straight axle front though.

They made some changes to the EPA MPG numbers and some vehicles that were right on the edge ended up being disqualified for the program. I knew about that and the MPG for my XJ actually dropped from 17 to 16mpg average from the new numbers.

My wife is insisting that I get something with a softtop. She says she knows I miss my old CJs and that I wouldn't be happy a year down the road with another Cherokee. I told her that the price goes up for those, but she says that since I am sacrificing the XJ that I put all of my time into that I need to treat myself. I don't think I'm going to argue with what she is saying.

Hopefully Roger will post up a pick of his XJ all un-pimped out.  We replaced the 33's with R.J.'s old 225/75/15's after I pulled three nails/screws from them and pluged the holes.  We also pulled the front and rear bumpers and the sliders.  I couldn't help but chuckle as it rolled down the driveway.   ;)

All of them.  We pulled the other 3 off of the parts XJ and swapped them with some really shot wheels and tires that had come off of my car trailer.  With the leaky spare you had, it gave us a full set.  How did you manage to pick up that many nails/screws, were you driving through a construction site?

Roger had faxed in all his paper work before Thursday night, and before the goverment kicked in some more $$$, so I think he is going to be fine.  Last I talked to him he was headed back the MI on Friday.

Kirk is right. I was at work until 10:30pm Thursday night signing paperwork and faxing things back and forth with the dealership to finish the deal. All I had to do this morning was drop my XJ off and pick up the new car. Because time was tight and I already gave my VIN# and all the information to a Nissan dealer we bought a new Nissan Sentra with all the goodies. MSRP of 18,875 and we walked out the door after tax, title, tags and everything for 12,245 after my $4500 XJ trade in and their cash incentives. It's rated at 34mpg Hwy and 27mpg City. I spent all day today looking at TJs for sale in the area. I'm test driving one tomorrow that I really liked, but the owner was out of town so I couldn't get into it and test drive it today. Here's the one pic I took of my XJ before I left work Friday morning.

Any problems driving all the way back to MI with those tires?  You made it, so I am guessing it was ok.  Did you get a chance to pull the hitch before you traded it in?

I don't know if it was the smaller tires that messed up my geometry or if those tires weren't balanced very well, but I had an awful vibration the entire way here. When I looked out the back window the cars behind me were all blurry from the shaking. If I looked too long it would make me dizzy. The drive went ok, but it took me over 13 hours because I couldn't go very fast without the XJ feeling unsafe. There was a crowd that gathered around it at the dealership when I dropped it off this morning. They all that it was great.

Kirk, because of the time involved with driving and having to get it turned it early this morning I didn't get a chance to take anything off the Jeep. I ended up turning it in with the spacers and control arm drop  brackets, which I had planned to remove.
Title: Re: Input Needed
Post by: kirksjeep on August 02, 2009, 06:49:53 AM
It was probably the tires.  They had a lot of mud in the rims.  I tried to get as much out as I could, but there was still a lot there.

I have been looking at a hitch on ebay and I didn't want to bid if you took your old one off.

Yea, they were R.J.'s.  They all had about a 1/2" of mud coating the inside.  I got most of the big stuff out, but even missing a good size chunk would add some vibrations.  Two of the tires were pretty worn and may have been cupped.  It didn't look like they were rotated that often.
