Title: working on a 4.0
Post by: smaug1911 on October 25, 2012, 06:26:55 AM
Got a friend with a 97 4.0 wrangler who needs me to work on it.

I am assuming that the brakes, shocks, alternator, regular tuneup won't be a problem. They said it needs needs exhaust headers back....anyone forsee problems with that? They also think it needs a new head gasket....I am not touching that. Anyone done one?

What should I expect to encounter in this project that would be unexpected. I hear it has sat still for 2 years.

why do you think it needs an alternator or a head gasket (head gaskets are easy on a 4.0 it ia an ohv engine just put every thing back wher it came from)

i would jut drain the fluids and replace them all before starting i would prime the oil system if it has set for 2 years

I was going to do all the fluids, too. Left that out.

I am only going on what the owner thought it needed and those are the items they mentioned. I haven't seen the vehicle. they said it is not currently runnable.

If it needs exhaust from the headers back, it sounds like it will need o2 sensers also.  When you do the alternator, change the serpentine belt.  Just about all Jeeps come with the plastic cap radiators that are known for developing leaks.  If you run into any problems check out jeepforum.com for solutions.

Do these engines run on distributors with rotors?

Thanks everyone.

Yes, a 97 4.0 does.
