Title: AX-15 issues
Post by: Mr Rock on January 19, 2011, 11:41:13 PM
I'm looking for some input.
My tranny has been acting up for a while now, and it's hard to shift, grinding in every gear and now it gets stuck in gear and it's getting worse. It started making noise like a bearing is going when it's in neutral and I let the clutch out?
Do I attempt to rebuild it (it has over 170K on it) look for a used one, (around $450) for a direct replacement.  or go for a external slave setup (used $750) or ??

Thoughts?

What are you doing Saturday?. I'm sure I can talk my neighbor into using his lift in his heated garage!

Will, this might be a good time to do your u-joints!

Sounds like your tranny is going to need some work. I had problems with mine popping out of 2nd gear and difficulty shifting when it was cold last winter and switched to a synthetic fluid. It almost completely went away within a week and I really haven't thought about it since.

Im free on Saturday. What time?

Sounds like your slave cyl is leaking causing hard shifting & sticking into gear. Check fluid in Clutch master cyl resiviour. If it's low then it's leaking.  Noise when you let clutch out could be the input bearing going bad.  Will need to hear it. Also if you don't use the correct fluid for the AX15 then it will give you issues.

With only 58K miles (before the lift and tires) I broke 5th gear and it locked the shifter into neutral and wouldn't come out.  I had to have it towed home.  I pulled the tranny myself and took it to a shop.  They diagnosed it, replaced 5th gear and replaced all the seals.  It only set me back $300 and a few hours of work.

One big difference is the number of miles.  Have you considered upgrading to a NV4500?  Some time in the future I plan to upgrade to a NV4500, but I have other priorities for now.  I know a lot of guys upgrade to a NV3550 out of a newer TJ, stronger then the AX-15, but it is still a medium duty transmission.
