Title: Roof basket on KJ
Post by: kirksjeep on February 23, 2013, 10:11:37 PM
Since the KJ became my DD, I have been trying to not make it so soccer mom-ish.  My latest project was adding a roof rack.  The cross rails are home made with electrical conduit and fence post ends.  I disassembled the back of the rack and took 3" out of it to fit the stock KJ roof rails which get narrower as it goes to the rear. It came out nice and low, and in my opinion flows pretty well.

That looks great and it helps on the non soccer mom look.  :D.  I do have to say a set of 31in BFG AT's would help even more.  BFG AT's make any rig look awesome.  Since my jeep is my DD im planning on another set of rims and tires for the every day comute and the BFG AT's would always be my first choice. Will keep the 15in rims and tires for the trail bashing but the other rims and tires for the daily comute. Just waiting to hit lotto ;D

The tires are almost 31", they measure out at 30.5 ( 245/75/16).  They are also AT's, but not BFG, they are Mastercraft ATX.  Not as aggressive as the BFG, but quieter on the road and have a 60k mile warranty.

Basket looks great!  Everything you build looks great for that matter.  Nice work.

If the KJ was my only rig I would consider a SFA swap and some bigger tires.  The next step up would be going from the current 2 1/4" lift to a 3.5" lift, and going to 265/75/16 tires (32.5").  But that would require a gear change and would kill my gas mileage.  I think I'll keep my $$ and time focused on my YJ for now.

Thanks Bill for the complement.  I'll admit it helps to have a spare 3 car garage to work out of.

I'm sure being on a shore tour doesn't hurt either haha.
