Title: I need to find a good shop
Post by: 00toyo on July 09, 2009, 08:37:04 PM
Does anyone know of a trust-worthy shop that can work on 4x4's. Or have any suggestions on how I can fix my 2000 toyota tacoma? I cracked my front gear housing and tore up the gears. I am not positive how to do the front end. I'm not afraid to turn a wrench just not sure. I just want to have my truck 4x4 again. Please Help.

Pete has done work for several members in this club, including myself.  The only problem is, he's up in Ellington, Ct.  That's about an hour and a half from Groton.  He does great work and absolutely no one else in Ct can beat his prices that I know of.

If you cracked the housing then the whole thing needs to be replaced.  Check Car-Part.com

I would have to agrre with Paul on this one, just replace it.  If the housing is broken and the gears are toast, then find one out of a bone yars.   www.car-part.com can be used to find one, but some yards don't keep thier stuff updated so call first.  Also if you find a few, you can negotiate the price a little.

So how did you manage to do this much damage?

Great...another Tacoma guy!!!

Check TTORA or Northeast toyota crawlers for someone who has done a solid axle swap. They will let their from differential go for $100 or less.

I can help you with the work.

Just make sure the gear ratio matches. 4.10 is standard but there are others out there in certain trucks.

Oh...and make sure the front diff is either ADD or non-ADD depending on what you have.

I assume ADD
(do you have to lock your hubs at the wheel?)

4.10 is not necessisarly standard, even for 4x4.  Welcome felow Taco guy!

You could consider going non-add if you are ADD.  this allows for a little more lift on the front (up to 3.5") since your CV's are not continously spinning.

Better yet, do a SAS!

My garage is open for the job, i have most/all the tools we would need and the space to do it.

Yes, 4.30, 3.91, and 3.58's exist in different tacomas, but 4.10 is the most likely to be found in any individual truck. OK...so maybe it isn't the "standard"...but it is the most often factory installed gears.
