Post by: reptile610 on June 22, 2009, 03:13:14 AM
well my buddy bought a parts jeep and i can have the whole front end outta it for $75 it's a dana  30 and has the same gear ratio as mine... paul and i are gonna put my control arm brackets on it and also wrap the axle with 8th inch steel and square the control arms and i think wrap the tie rods too. so should i also buy those seals? and where do i get them at or do i have to order them? and paul. where can i get this steel at and how much do you think im going to need/ how much is it gonna cost about?

What year is the parts Jeep?  Depending on the year XJ it might have CAD and may have the 260 U-joints.  4wd hardware has some axle seals for $65 and Northridge had them in Black only for $60.

it's a 92 Cherokee limited. my buddy bought it for the engine and he's gonna rebuild it completely. he's giving me the whole front suspension, electric fan, and cat back that has what looks like a flowmaster 40 on it all for $140.

That will be a HP D30 verses the LP D30 currently in your XJ. Swap the axles, but take the axleshafts out of your current one to swap into that one to retain the larger ujoints.

x2.  While your axle shafts are out replace the U-joints.  If they are in question now, spend a few $$ and replace them while they are out and save the time.  Outer axle seals are highly recomended, but not required.  Yes, get new gear lube since you don't know the condition of the current fluid in the 92.  I think the XJ's did away with the CAD in 90?  Roger (Senior) would know for sure.

The H.P. D30 has a stronger ring and pinion and will offer a little more clearnace.

ha! so all in all this isn't gonna be a complete waste of time? and i'll get something outta it other than an extremely heavy but indestructible front end.

I'm pretty sure that 90 was the last year of the disconnected front axles in Cherokees. New diff fluid is a must and Kirk just seconded what I already told you in pms. Go ahead and change out the ujoints in your axleshafts while you have them out anyway. You are on the right track here Doug.

The axle shafts from your current axle will have the teeth on them for the ABS, but I'm not sure how the sensors bolt up.  I would think that worse case you would have to swap your knuckles from the current alxe to the 92, but the sensors might attach to the calipers.

hm...  but somehow or another i should be able to keep them right? i mean i guess the only reason for the axle swap would be for the better diff right? i could just try and swap the diffs if worse comes to worse couldn't i?

I would think so, but I'm not an ABS expert.  Anything can be done with time and $$$ but I can't imagine that it is that hard.

it's a bit of a nightmare, but it can be done.  as far as anything else, i think we'll only have time to do your front end friday/saturday am.  i don't think we'll have too much time for a lot more, but we'll see .  the abs is a matter of swapping the knuckles over which we may have to do anyways, i believe the brakes are different between the 2 years, we'll make it work. like i said the f/end in my 89 xj was a hybrid of lots parts.  84 housing 94 shafts 89 brakes 94 wheel bearings, 84 rotors and pads, but it will work.

alright. i have a dental appointment at 1230 on friday. as soon as im done with that im going over and ripping the front end outta that jeep and heading up to your house.. might be working late that night if u wanna pull an all nighter just lemme know. so long as i can still have my abs then we're all good. you want me to buy the steel before i get to your house? how much do i need?
