oh on a side note, Zach's CB is done minus the straps. We were in fact able to get the space station. They're doing well and send their best. ;)

I saw your rig at the sub fest, zach.  That antenna looks great!  I can't imagine having the whole thing attached!  I would be careful.  Does it send and receive well?

idk.. i left that part to him. I just did the install/painting. lol. I'll ask him when i see him again and maybe we'll get it. We tried changing the switch around on bottom. that got us reception further up. but we still have broken transmissions. Like if he were to say a 5 word sentence it would only hear the first 2.

Is this some kind of special antenna you guys are trying to rig up to work??? What is the brand name? Don't forget, until the antenna is mounted and TUNED with an SWR/Field Strength Meter, it won't work as well as it should.

It's some type of military whip antenna.  It's f'n huge, at least 20 ft. of total length between the two pieces.

Thoes are used for the Army's tactical radios(encrypted).  They are on every truck/humvee that rolls outside the wire.  I forget the frequencies used, but i'm sure they are tuned for the specifc range of the Army's radios, not CB radios.  You should probably stick w/ a CB radio.

Every frequency has an ideal antenna lenght that works best for it (I had some training on this for Afghanistan).

YES it can work.  you need to bypass the tuning coils in the base.  the antenna is for HF (high freq)  so is the CB. The tuning colis are what changes the 'hright' of the antenna for the specfic freq's.  tuning the antenna is much like tuning the stainless steel whip (it has to be trimmed) or coils added.
If your SWR reading was higher on channel 40 than it was on channel 1, then it simply means the antenna is too long. If it was higher on channel 1 than it was on channel 40, it is too short. This is really easy to change if you own a tunable-tip antenna. If you own an antenna like this, you can simply unlock the tip and raise or lower the antenna. Continue tuning until you reach a good ratio. If you own a fiberglass whip antenna, it is a little more difficult. First, you have to remove the tip and cut until you can access the wire coil. If it needs to be shortened, you have to begin cutting in around ¼" increments until it is correct. Now, if it is too long, you have to take the top coil and continue moving it out in slight increments until it is correct.

also, the paint might have screwed it up
