I have run that winch since 2008 and have over 40 pulls on it between CT and CA and countless air refills on my 35's. It's a solid piece. I am running the Warn 2.5Gal tank in my trunk as well for surge volume. It is a bit pricey, but worth every penny IMO. Everybody has a story that will support or dispute a part, so decide what you really want and is the money really worth it to you. My experience is that it is an amazing product that has served me well in air usage, multiple winch outs, drags, pulls and rollover recoveries without any problems.
It sounds like gearhead's buddy just had a bad run of luck with the winches. And gearhead, did your buddy know that you cant have the air hooked up to a tank or any other closed off source when you run the winch? If you do the winch will shut down as it builds up back pressure. Just some helpful information in case he didnt know. (I'm pretty sure its in the instruction manual which most of us dont read) Specifically on page 12 of the link below in the section: "Select the Winch Mode"

i belive he got one lemon and i helped kill the other(aka pulling me with a dead cj in tow up a 60 degree 100yrd snot coverd slope) but he never hooked it up to a tank it was mounted to a 2" reciver tray with battery lead conecters on all 4 sides of his truggy and 4 "trailer hiches" one on every side and he stored the winch in the hitch behind the cab while ridding on the trail
