Dana 44 Gear Ratios

(1/3) > >>

B52BUFF:
Here is my question.  I am looking at purchasing a Dana 44 axel to replace my Dana 35 and I plan on going to a size 33 tire, what gear ratio would you recommend.  I was thinking a 4.27.  Now before you ask yourself how I came to this conclusion look at this chart.

I am looking for a good middle of the road gear set for the size tires (33) I plan on staying with. If anything I may consider a 4.56 to give me a little more power.

Comments?

Try using that calulator.  I like it because you can input all your ratios affecting your final drive ratio with your current set up then put your new proposed set up next to it to see what RPM's you'll be running with a different tire/gear combo at different speeds while being able to easily compair it to what your current set up gives you.

Aside from that, 4.10s are a good choice as you can get a 4 Cyliner Dana 30 that will already have 4.10's cheap.  Kirk did this swap to make it easier for him and it works well on his 35's.  He also used a 8.8 already geared to 4.10's, so his swap into the YJ was almost a bolt in.

If you went that way, you'd only have to re-gear the rear to 4.10's and would have a spare Dana 30 you could strip for trail spares.  I have 33's on mine with the stock 3.73's and it still runs good.  Its a little underpowered on the highway, but the supercharger makes up for it.  I also have a Dana 44 rear locked that I will be selling soon if your interested.

I'm running 4.56 gears in my TJ and the power band is great. With the 5spd I can still cruise 65mph at about 2600 RPM and the Jeep feels very comfortable in that range. I also like that I don't have to downshift for every little hill on the highway.

Decisions Decisions.  I have also considered purchasing a ready to install 8.8.  I have found good prices on them.  A rear locker is a must.  I'd like to have this ready before Florida run this year.  I am still continuing on with the philosophy of Armor Armor Armor.  I have more skid plates I want to install but I also would like to feel safe with my axles.  I have some things to think about over the next several weeks but I think the Stock Guy title will have to be passed on.
