The Mud Pit > Wrenching
Cheap fix for a common problem
(1/1)
kirksjeep:
After reading on the members side about Steve busting his drive shaft I posted up a cool/cheap way to help prevent the problem of breaking the bolts that secure the straps holding the U-joint. Before my 8.8 swap I snapped the same bolt and had to replace my U-joint too.
Here is a cool part and write up that eliminates the straps:

Here is another part number for Spicer brand:

sweet I'll do this when I change mine

Just FYI, be careful when doing this modification, the U-bolts can be tightened unevenly and cause the u-joint to wear pre-maturely.
Other than that and rust issues, they work beautifully in my YJ...

I was looking through the 4wd hardare catolog today and they cary the U-bolts, but for about $12 a set. This will only work for the rear axle and it does require drilling. For the D30 you have to buy a differnt Pinion ($44?) and the U-bolt kit. The back of theD30 pinion does not have enough room for the nuts.
