x2.  While your axle shafts are out replace the U-joints.  If they are in question now, spend a few $$ and replace them while they are out and save the time.  Outer axle seals are highly recomended, but not required.  Yes, get new gear lube since you don't know the condition of the current fluid in the 92.  I think the XJ's did away with the CAD in 90?  Roger (Senior) would know for sure.

The H.P. D30 has a stronger ring and pinion and will offer a little more clearnace.

ha! so all in all this isn't gonna be a complete waste of time? and i'll get something outta it other than an extremely heavy but indestructible front end.

calvynandhobbs:
I'm pretty sure that 90 was the last year of the disconnected front axles in Cherokees. New diff fluid is a must and Kirk just seconded what I already told you in pms. Go ahead and change out the ujoints in your axleshafts while you have them out anyway. You are on the right track here Doug.

reptile610:
alright. just making sure that im not gonna go out and spend rediculus amounts of money on a basically rebuilt axle and reinforce the crap outta it and then it be worthless and no different from the first one.... i tell ya this much though... im not gonna buy a skid plate now  ;D
